No amount of preparedness can protect people from the shockwaves it triggers, the destruction it causes and the broken lives it leaves behind. This was evidenced in Japan, where a tsunami generated by a 8.9 magnitude earthquake — the seventh biggest in history — has claimed at least 10,000 lives, mainly in the northeast.
